POST BARIATRIC SURGERY NUTRITION AND DIET PLAN

Bariatric Surgery is done for morbid obesity (BMI ˃32.5) or metabolic surgery is done for Diabesity    ( Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolic syndrome) is on a rise in India.

This surgery aims to create restrictions on food intake. The Common procedures done in India are laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy ( LSG), Roux en Y gastric bypass ( RYGB), Mini gastric bypass ( MGB)or a non-surgical treatment such as Intragastric balloon.

Since the eating capacity has reduced, the eaten food has to be nutritious enough to complete the body requirements in a limited quantity of food. It is important for patients to lose weight in a healthier way, consume limited nutritious food & stay fit after bariatric surgery

The typical food plan in the immediate post-op period is as follows –

Common instruction for all Procedures:

  1. Eat slowly & chew properly
  2. Eat Proteins, fruit/soups prior to regular meals.
  3. Separate solid & liquids food.
  4. Stop eating when full or may lead to vomiting.
  5. Drink adequate water
  6. Have small frequent meals, have healthy snacks
  7. Keep a food diary & record the food eaten prior to visit with dietician.

It is important to emphasize regular follow up, exercise & supplement intake regularly to all patients.

    Most of these foods & beverages contains empty calories in the form of sugar. These products mainly provide calories with limited nutritional value (for e.g. vitamins, minerals, proteins and fibers). Every bite counts after surgery. The items listed below easily flow through the restrictions thus allowing you to eats and absorb more calories. Filling up on these “concentrated sweets” can prevent weight loss and can replace healthier foods in your diet. Avoid it totally.
