Diet after Bariatric Surgery

Post Bariatric Surgery Diet Phases

After bariatric surgery, the diet is usually divided into three phases to promote healing and weight loss. The stages of the post bariatric surgery diet are as follows:

  1. Liquid diet – For weight loss and to reduce weight of the liver given before and after surgery .
    • Allowed- Liquid shakes,juices,soup ,water ,coconut water
    • Before Surgery – Salads, proteins rich food allowed .
    • Avoid- Sweets,milk shakes, carbonated drink.
    • Liquid diet should be take in filtered form post surgery.
    • After surgery liquid diet should be continue for 10 to 15 days post surgery.

  2. Semisolid diet (15 days)- Food should be in mashed form and semisolid form.

  3. Regular food – After one month patient can take regular food. A patient whose undergone sleeve gastrectomy they might have difficulty with eating rice for upto three months, they can prefer dal khichdi.
Fluid intake-

Hydration is essential after bariatric surgery to promote healing and maintain good health. Here are some guidelines for fluid intake diet after bariatric surgery:

  1. Water Intake should be 2.5 to 3 litre per day.
  2. Patient can label the bottles as much water they have to drink.
  3. A patient who has undergone sleeve gastrectomy surgery they may have difficulty drinking water after surgery. They can take flavoured water.
  4. If patient is drinking less water they can suffer from dizziness.
  5. Avoid – Sweetened beverages like milkshake, lassi or any carbonated drinks.
  6. After operation patient should take adequate intake of protein, calcium ,vitamin, iron.
Food sources-

Bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure that assists obese people in losing weight by limiting the amount of food their stomach can hold. To aid in the recovery process and maintain a healthy weight after bariatric surgery, it is critical to follow a balanced and nutritious diet. Here are some food sources that are rich in essential nutrients that can help with a post bariatric surgery diet:

  1. Protein- Eggs,chicken,fish, beans chana ,pulses.
  2. Calcium -Milk and milk products,rajgira,ragi rajma,almonds,cluster beans, fenugreek ,kulith.
  3. Vitamins- Green leafy vegetables,lemon.
  4. Vitamin B12- Egg,meat,milk,milk powder.
  5. Folic acid – Egg, meat,Harbhara,okra,ambat chuka,sesame.
  6. Vitamin D- Sunlight,meat,egg yolk.
  7. Iron- Halim seeds,jowar,bajara,masoor,mataki,shelu,black raisins.
Do’s and don’ts –

  1. Carefully Follow All Dietary Instructions:  Your surgeon will give you specific instructions for your post-bariatric surgery diet, and it is critical that you follow these instructions to ensure optimal healing and weight loss.

  2. Use Smaller Plate Sizes: Because your stomach size will be reduced after bariatric surgery, it is important to use smaller plates to help control portion sizes.

  3. Time Your Liquids: To avoid overeating, avoid drinking liquids 30 minutes before and after meals.

  4. Allow Enough Time To Eat: It is important to eat slowly and allow your body enough time to digest the food.

  5. Mindful Eating: Pay attention to your body and stop eating when you’re satisfied. This will aid in avoiding overeating and discomfort.

  6. Chew Your Food Thoroughly: Chewing your food thoroughly aids digestion and prevents discomfort.

  7. Avoid Concentrated Sweets And Bakery Products: Limit your intake of concentrated sweets and bakery products, which are high in calories and sugar and can contribute to weight gain.

  8. Slowly Reintroduce Food: If you experience vomiting after surgery, it is critical to reintroduce food slowly and eat small, frequent meals.

  9. Examine Food Labels: Pay attention to the nutritional content of the foods you eat and avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar, or calories.

  10. Consult With A Dietitian: Meeting with a registered dietitian on a regular basis can help you stay on track with your diet and ensure that you are getting adequate nutrition.

  11. Exercise Regularly: Exercise is essential for maintaining weight loss and improving overall health.

  12. Follow Up With Your Healthcare Team: Meeting with your surgeon and healthcare team on a regular basis will help ensure optimal healing and long-term success after surgery.
